What is an energy rating anyway?

The Israeli energy label rates products from A (economical) to G (wasteful), based on the estimated annual electricity consumption. What's really important is the small number on the label: annual consumption in kWh. Two refrigerators of the same rating can differ by dozens of kWh per year — always compare the number, not just the letter.

The products where it really matters

A refrigerator works 24/7 - it is the largest permanent household electricity consumer. A difference of 150 kWh per year between models equals about NIS 100 a year, and about NIS 1,500 over the life of the refrigerator. An air conditioner is the biggest seasonal consumer: a high-rated inverter air conditioner saves hundreds of NIS in a hot northern summer compared to an old model. Washing machines and dishwashers - the savings there are mainly in water and heating, and are noticeable in families that run a daily cycle.

When is it worth paying more?

A simple rule: the more hours the product works, the faster a high rating pays for itself. In the refrigerator and air conditioner for the bedroom (which works every night) - always go for the high rating. In a product that works a little, the difference in price is not always justified.

And most importantly: replacing a 12-15 year old product with a new model is almost always a savings - technology has advanced so much that the new product 'finances' part of itself in the electricity bill.
